Used SSDs are not priced like used laptops. A drive's value tracks the NAND flash and controller inside it far more than the sticker on the case, and the used market moves with the memory cycle — sometimes sharply, week to week. Two drives that look identical can be worth very different amounts depending on interface, capacity, endurance rating, and how much life is left on the flash. Before you accept the first offer or dump a lot on a marketplace, it's worth understanding the handful of things a serious buyer actually pays for. Get those right and the same pile of drives can be worth substantially more.
The first thing that sets your price is whether you're holding enterprise/data-center drives or consumer drives, because they sell into completely different markets.
U.2, U.3, and enterprise M.2 and SAS drives from lines like Intel/Solidigm (DC P-series, D-series), Samsung (PM-series), Micron (7000/9000-series), and Kioxia (CD/CM-series) hold their value best. They ship in volume out of decommissioned servers, they carry high endurance ratings, and there's steady downstream demand for them — so this is where the real money is, especially in bulk.
SATA and consumer NVMe drives (the M.2 sticks out of desktops and laptops) are worth less per unit, but they're absolutely still worth selling in quantity. Don't throw them in with the enterprise lot at one blended price — separating them usually nets you more.
Once the enterprise/consumer split is clear, four attributes do most of the work in a quote. Read them off the label before you ask for a number.
If you can pull a SMART report — even a screenshot of the wear-leveling / percentage-used and power-on hours — it lets a buyer firm up a number instead of quoting conservatively against the unknown. Low-hour, low-wear drives are worth more, and being able to prove it is worth real money on a large lot.
You don't need to test anything to sell it, but knowing which bucket you're in helps you get the right number.
Any drive leaving your hands should have its data dealt with, and doing it properly is both the responsible move and a selling point. A drive that's been securely erased (ATA Secure Erase, NVMe Format with a cryptographic erase, or the manufacturer's sanitize command) stays fully functional and resells at full value — unlike a physically shredded drive, which is worth only scrap. If your data policy allows secure erasure rather than destruction, you keep the drive's resale value and still meet your compliance requirement. A reputable buyer will also provide documentation — a certificate of data sanitization or destruction — for your records. If you can't erase them yourself, that's fine; just flag it, and make sure your buyer sanitizes and certifies.
For a lot of any size, how you present and ship it affects both the offer and how fast you get paid. A rough count by category — "about 200 mixed enterprise U.2, mostly 3.84TB Samsung and Intel, pulled from decommissioned servers" — is enough to get a real quote started; you don't need a perfectly sorted spreadsheet. When it's time to ship, keep drives from rattling loose: anti-static packaging for enterprise NVMe, trays or original packaging where you have them, and sturdy boxes. On larger lots a buyer will usually cover or arrange freight. The cleaner and better-described the lot, the higher and firmer the number.
For one or two drives, a marketplace like eBay is fine. For a lot — dozens or hundreds of drives, or bare boards — it rarely is. Listing individually eats hours, you pay selling fees and shipping on every unit, you carry the fraud and return risk, and enterprise U.2/SAS drives simply don't have a deep consumer audience. A broker gives you one quote for the whole lot, one shipment, one payment, and takes on the testing, grading, and downstream selling. You trade a slightly lower per-unit headline for far less work, far less risk, and — on volume — often more money in hand after fees. That's the whole point of selling to a buyer who moves this stuff every week.
